From the beginning I knew I needed something small that could fit into a jean pocket (because I hate carrying things in my hand); something with a zipper to keep everything in (I really don’t trust flip wallets, and magnetic buttons would cause havoc with my bank cards); and leather so that the wallet would last long and be water resistant.
I couldn’t even begin to rely on the general female market for any combination of the above. Most women’s wallets, even the small ones, are either so thick you couldn’t fit them comfortably into a back pocket anyway, or contain so little they are basically coin pouches.
Bellroy seemed like a really good option. They appealed to the pragmatic in me, and their range covered the basics of what I required in a wallet.
Since my main need was something small and zippered, that really narrowed down my options, Sometimes you don’t want to have endless opportunity to search further and further a field; if you can find what you need in a carefully curated selection then you’re able to make decisions faster and more efficiently (this is the reason why Android and me are not friends!)
Anyway, I can’t actually remember what model this particular type of Bellroy is called, and they don’t actually stock this particular one anymore. This version is the upgrade you could say, to mine – it carries more cards, includes room enough for coins (something I do miss dearly) while all still maintaining a really slim profile and compact design overall.
Overall I’m really impressed with the quality and make of Bellroy. I’ve lost it behind the washing machine, dropped it down the toilet (forgot it was in my back pocket and it fell in. I sterilised the thing afterwards!), thrown it into bags, thrust it into pockets, pulled on the zipper, jammed notes untidily inside, and the dear thing just continues to keep together and do its job. And thanks to the way that leather wears, the wallet gets softer and more pliable with use.
I bought mine from Inside Home & Gifts in Liverpool Street, which has sadly closed its doors in Hobart, but you can also purchase them online direct from Bellroy, or from Pitbull Mansion in Criterion Street.
