Introducing my summer 2016 wardrobe! Well, end of spring/summer 2016. Technically we’re still in spring, but I decided to end my spring capsule early because it was evident that the clothes I picked to last the season were not cut out for the job. Also I was missing colour big time.
Also I have an announcement to make at the end of this post. So you should keep reading. Pleasekthanx!
Spring-summer 2016 has been up until recently stormy, overcast, freezing, on occasion, wet, and most recently humid and sunny. As I write this the sun is shining and showing us what a lovely spring day can be, but hasn’t been for most of the season. Thanks spring. Real funny.
Anyway, I’ve tailored my next capsule to reflect the reality of our weather here in the down under of Down Under, and I’m pretty excited. For one, it’s probably the most colourful capsule I’ve created to date, and two, I’ve included a variety of materials that will hopefully see me through our unpredictable summer that will either be utterly gorgeous or utterly anticlimactic.
Woohoo! Colour! I tried going the monochromatic route, I really tried, but it ain’t me, doll face. I’m a big fan of jewel tones and ‘in between’ colours; they suit my skin tone better than pastel, fluro, or primary shades. My main colours this season will be olive green and shades of purple/dusty pink. I’ve never been a fan of wearing pink, although give me a colour swatch of true magenta and I will stare at it for hours. Despite my aversion to what is typically a ‘ditzy female’ colour (ah Legally Blonde, you were a good movie), dirty shell pink and related tones are very complimentary on me. I haven’t worn this colour for years, so I am quite chuffed to get back into it again.
I’ve got new silk to try out, a new style of jeans in 100% cotton, and silk-cashmere in the form of a very spring-ish but still summer appropriate jumper. Otherwise I am keeping hold of some fine merino wool cardigans and a cashmere knitted tee just in case the days go totally south and we get catapulted back into a cold snap again.
Here are some of the key pieces I’m really looking forward to wearing and styling:
Silk cashmere jumper // This is a new purchase from my trusty Grana. I wanted a coloured jumper that wasn’t fluffy (read too warm and cosy) or grey (because remember too many shades of grey?) and this one fitted my needs perfectly. The silk-cashmere combination should suit our summers perfectly, providing both a little bit of warmth on a cool day, but still be light and breathable if the mercury manages to rise a little.
Mum jeans // A telling sign of my non-age is that I had to google the difference between boyfriend jeans and mum jeans. I still can’t tell what the difference is meant to be. At any rate, these are also a new purchase from Grana and have enough bag to them to be unmistakably casual and summery in vibe, but there’s enough shape in the posterior to not be completely unflattering to my already flat-ass. I mentioned in a previous post that I was getting a little tired of boot cut (*gasp*) and I was itching to try more straight leg or even skinny styles. This pair of jeans is me dipping my toe into the pool.
Open cardigan // You’ll know by now my love of cardigans and their versatility. This one is super old from Valley Girl absolutely yonks ago. It’s one of the few very synthetic items I hold on to in my wardrobe because despite its fabric content (polyester and rayon spandex), the colour is beautiful, it drapes really well, and the cut is casual but elegant. Right up my style alley. The sage hue also pairs well with pretty much everything I own, from burnt oranges, to dusty pinks, to all the washes of denim. Yes I do overheat in it in warm weather, and it’s far too thin for winter and leaves me freezing, but on the days where I can find a happy medium, I do love to wear it.
The simple sandal // These little sandals deserve a post of their own (stay tuned). There are few times I want to give or make an ultimatum because let’s be honest, wanting to achieve the perfect [insert desire] is not always realistic or the kind thing to do to ourselves. For me, the exception are these sandals by A Pair and A Spare, which I think are the perfect sandal, and I can’t wait to be able to wear them more and style them with my new found understanding of how I wear my clothes.
