Your eyes read right, dear readers. The self professed hater of skinny jeans has caved and purchased a pair. Actually two pairs.
Like vegemite or Japanese natto, sometimes you just need to try it to find out if you’ll like it or not (for the record I love natto).
My motivation to invest in a pair is twofold:
- current fashion trends. I’m not one to slavishly follow the hottest thing, and skinny jeans are not exactly new news anymore. However I can’t ignore the definite inclination for the sartorial silhouette of big and oversized on top, skinny on bottom. Jumpers and tees are overly cosy and billow, with relaxed shoulders and wide fits around the abdomen. The only way to counter that material breeziness is to wear something really tailored and slim on the bottom; and so leggings and/or skinny cut pants are the answer.
- how my body has changed. I can’t continue believing that my body is what it used to be when I was 21 or even 27 for that matter. Tight fitting tops just don’t flatter me the way they used to, and paired with an ever expanding waist line that is in desperate need of a daily dose of basic cardio, I look more dumpy than delicate. The upside of this perfectly normal coming-to-terms-with-my-maturing-body sentiment, I’m actually really enjoying big, oversized tops. I’ve got the shoulders and a bit more chestal area to not feel like I’m dressing in a gigantic hessian sack, and clothes hang better as a result of not having a wire-y frame. Like Meghan Trainor said, guys like a little more booty to hold at night, but in this situation my clothes like to hug more flesh than less.
So, what am I looking forward to pairing these with?
The aforementioned big, cosy jumpers – the weather hit a bit of a curb the other week and it finally feels like autumn now. I cannot wait to pair some big, lovely cashmere and long length cardigans with the slimmer denim.
Colour – the black stone wash pair are my first non-blue jeans. I couldn’t bring myself to committing to down right black, but I can work with a washed grey, which will hopefully fade even more with regular use. As much as I consider denim a neutral for me, there are times where nothing else but grey will do to really make whatever other colour you’re wearing pop. And we all know that I like my colour.
Ankle grazing shoes – due to my love for the boot cut and seeing your feet/shoes peeking out from a wide hem, I’ve never given much thought to the appearance of my shoes and how they generally look with what I’m wearing. I’m not a shoes girl, but since I can’t hide 90% of it underneath a bell bottom when I’m wearing skinnies, I’ll need to up my shoe game, particularly as we descend into the colder months.
These jeans are from my beloved Grana. Find them here.
